Hong Kong Invitational Cricket Festival 2003

Hong Kong Cricket Club, 28 & 29th October 2003

Sun, sixes and swilling were in abundant evidence on 28th and 29th October when the second annual Hong Kong Invitational Cricket Festival was staged at the Gap. After last year’s downpours put a dampener on proceedings the weather gods must have been in a good mood as we were blessed with true October-style glorious sunshine which made for a superb two days of swashbuckling cricket.

Nine teams lined up for the tournament, held during HKCA’s Cricket Week in the run-up to the International Sixes. Making their debuts at the Festival were last season’s Sunday League Champions Pakistan Association, Little Sai Wan CC, social side Fleet Cricket Club and overseas team Colonials Behaving Badly or CBBs as they are widely known. A seven-a-side format with 5 overs per innings was used, with Cup, Plate and Bowl trophies available.

Some fantastic cricket was played over the two days, with the guilt of taking two days off work by most people being dulled by the quaffing of substantial amounts of Corona beer! Ultimately Lamma CC managed to take the Bowl; Kai Tak retained their Plate Trophy and Pakistan Association triumphed over a competitive Subcont CC in the Cup final after losing to the same team in the earlier Cup round robin matches.

Of course a sackful of cricket balls were dispatched all around Hong Kong Cricket Club. Although none this year found their way into the swimming pool, the multi-storey car park came under threat, especially from Mohammed Tahir of Pakistan Association who won the Batsman of the Festival award. Munir Dar of Little Sai Wan picked up the Bowler of the Festival award and Manoj Cheruparambil of Kowloon Cricket Club was adjudged Player of the Festival.

The Colonials Behaving Badly always endeavour to live up to their name and this was particularly evident at and following the Players function at Mes Amis bar in Wanchai on the Tuesday night, ably assisted by, allegedly, members of the Kai Tak and Subcont teams!

Many thanks must go to everyone who helped to make this year’s Invitational Cricket Festival such a success, especially John Freeman, Kim Leung, Alan Swift, Glyn Davies and Jenny Lethbridge as well as the members and staff of Hong Kong Cricket Club and Lamma Cricket Club, plus of course the Festival sponsors International Administration Services, Mes Amis Bar & Grills and Corona Beer.

We’ve had fantastic feedback from the players and teams which competed at this year’s Festival. Nevertheless a lot of work will be going in to make the 2004 Invitational Cricket Festival even more enjoyable!
